Hertz's estimated $3 billion agreement with up-and-coming EV maker Polestar in 2022 was seen as a major moment for electric vehicle adoption. AdvertisementIt came after Hertz struck a similar deal with Tesla and agreed to buy 100,000 of its EVs in 2021. However, since then the global EV market has stalled , with demand for electric cars slumping and major automakers rolling back some of their investments . REUTERS/Rebecca Cook/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsTOKYO, Oct 19 (Reuters) - Honda Motor (7267.T) said on Thursday that it aims to set up a joint venture with General Motors (GM.N) and Cruise to begin a driverless ride service in Japan in early 2026. The three companies aim to establish the joint venture in first half of 2024 pending regulatory approval, the Japanese company said in a statement without providing financial details. Vogt said it was hard to say whether offering a driverless ride service in Tokyo posed a unique or distinct challenge for the company. The Japan service is planned to launch in central Tokyo, using dozens of Origins before expanding to a fleet of 500 vehicles, Honda said in its statement. The companies plan to later broaden the service to areas beyond central Tokyo, Honda said.

REUTERS/Heather Somerville/File PhotoAug 3 (Reuters) - Cruise, General Motors' (GM.N) robotaxi unit, said on Thursday it had signed the driverless car industry's first labor union agreements, a significant milestone as unions and robotaxi firms have historically been at odds. The company is partnering with two local San Francisco union chapters that represent electrical workers and janitors, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 6 and Service Employees International Union Local 87. Reuters could not definitively determine if these are the driverless car industry’s first union agreements. Cruise, which offers limited service in San Francisco with a fleet of Chevrolet Bolts fitted with driverless technology, has accumulated over 3 million driverless miles, the company said. CNN —The Chevrolet Bolt EV, General Motors first fully electric vehicle to be built and sold on a large scale, will go out of production by the end of this year. These new electric vehicles will be based GM’s new electric vehicle platform, Ultium, which is not used by the Bolt. The Bolt was, for a number of years, the best-selling electric vehicle in America that was not made by Tesla, although the gap was very wide. In all other respects, though, it was very similar to the Bolt EV, including the fact that it was available only with front-wheel-drive. To do that, GM engineers created a flexible electric vehicle architecture called Ultium that will be the basis of future GM vehicles.

A GMC pickup truck is displayed for sale on a lot at a General Motors dealership on January 05, 2023 in Austin, Texas. General Motors said Monday that its first-quarter U.S. sales rose 18% from a year ago, to just over 600,000 vehicles delivered, as it continued its rebound from the supply chain problems that limited global auto production in 2021 and early 2022. Most of those electric vehicles were Chevrolet Bolts, but GM did sell 968 of its brand-new Cadillac Lyriq EVs, built on the company's next-generation Ultium EV architecture. GM has been working to ramp up its production of its Ultium-based electric vehicles, with new high-volume Ultium-based models including an electric Chevrolet Equinox crossover due later in 2023. The company's EV sales volumes are expected to ramp up sharply from there in 2024 and 2025.
Ford CEO Jim Farley was rather blunt about the problems that Ford experienced as it rolled out its hot EV models, the Mustang Mach-E and the F-150 Lightning pickup. While both vehicles have a long list of waiting customers, Farley admitted that Ford encountered numerous problems with their production. They resumed last year, but GM ended up with total US EV sales of just under 40,000. In 2022 Ford’s US EV sales came to just under 62,000, roughly a tenth Tesla’s US sales that year. That means about 600,000 US Tesla sales for the year.
If you think driving a pint-sized Nissan Leaf is as good for the planet as driving a huge electric Hummer, think again. The GMC Hummer EV uses significantly more electricity than other EVs, meaning it produces more pollution upstream. Moreover, the GMC Hummer EV is in many ways a supersized gas guzzler for a new era. EVs can be energy guzzlers tooOn the whole, electric cars use less energy than gas-powered ones. The 4.5-ton elephant in the roomThe Hummer EV is a full 4,000 pounds heavier than a well-optioned, gas-powered Ford F-150.
Domino’s will be using Chevrolet Bolt electric vehicles for delivery at select U.S. locations. Domino’s Pizza Inc. is investing in electric vehicles for some of its U.S. outlets to help attract drivers and overcome a worker shortage that has hobbled pie deliveries industrywide this year. The world’s largest pizza chain by stores and sales said it would procure 800 Domino’s-branded Chevrolet Bolts for 37 of its own stores and hundreds of others run by its U.S. franchisees.
Startup AMP just raised $17.5 million for its tech that looks into battery health. Battery management is key to saving EVs from costly recalls. Monitoring battery health can help avoid costly recalls (like that of 142,000 Chevrolet Bolts), extend an EV's life, and manage the way EVs charge. AMP's energy management assesses battery health and performance as the battery sits in a car or in storage. AMP does so through its hardware, using an energy management unit manufactured by third-party partners, as well as a battery management system and software that provides insights.
